This well-designed machine has been around for over a decade and still stands out today as a great choice for espresso newbies. I bumped into it just recently and was pretty much amazed by its features, price and ease of use.
Besides making fantastic-tasting espressos and cappuccinos with the crema system based on a 15-bar professional-grade pump, this DeLonghi also comes with other features such as two thermostats that enable making different kinds of beverages simultaneously or independently.
But that’s not all. There is much more to it!
In my DeLonghi EC702 review, I’m going to offer my thoughts on why it might just be a great choice if you are looking for a dependable machine but are not ready to pay the top dollar for advanced units yet. Keep reading!

Not the best milk frother for fine latte art
I recently had a chance to review the DeLonghi EC702 espresso machine and I have to say, I am impressed. Well, as much as I can be with a machine in the $200 price range.
At first glance, I was impressed by the machine’s sleek, compact design. It doesn’t take up much counter space, which is great if you have a small kitchen. The unit feels sturdy and durable, which is always a plus.
The unit’s lower price point and limited features seem to be a trade-off for making an affordable, easy-to-use espresso machine. But it still packs a punch when it comes to features and performance!
One of the standout features of this machine is the pressurized portafilter that allows you to pull single or double shots of espresso with ease. In addition, you can use soft E.S.E. pods for a quick and effortless espresso fix.
I’m sure this feature is perfect for those hectic mornings when you don’t have the time or energy to grind beans or tamp down the espresso.
With 15 bars of pressure, the EC702 surpasses the industry standard of 9, which is sufficient to make good espresso. It’s worth noting that some manufacturers promote higher pressures without a clear benefit, but 15 bar is definitely more than enough.
Another noteworthy feature is the Pannarello steam wand. This is a great addition to an entry-level machine, as it takes the guesswork out of frothing milk manually. Just don’t expect a latte-art-quality microform.
What I like the most is the two separate thermostats. This means that you never have to worry about adjusting steam pressure and brewing temperature at the same time, which is a truly handy feature.
However, I do have to say that the attached plastic tamper is a bit of a letdown. As someone who takes their espresso seriously, I prefer to use my own tamper. But if you’re new to making espresso, this feature might be useful to you.
While there are some drawbacks to the EC702 – long heat-up time, and temperature fluctuations – its low price point more than makes up for these minor flaws. Overall, the DeLonghi EC702 is a fantastic machine for anyone looking for an affordable and reliable way to enjoy espresso at home.
Now, let’s get into the nitty gritty of this DeLonghi EC702 review. There is much more ground to cover and information to share!
Main Features
Build Quality
As I examined the DeLonghi EC702 espresso machine, I couldn’t help but be drawn in by its sparkling chrome finish. However, upon closer inspection, it became clear that the majority of the unit is constructed from plastic.
Although this may give the impression of low quality, it is important to note that this machine is incredibly affordable. So, plastic components were expected.
Despite the use of plastic, DeLonghi has included a stainless steel boiler with a reputation for durability. This addition ensures that the machine can withstand the test of time, providing consistent and delicious espresso for years to come.
Furthermore, the portafilter is sturdy and locks in securely, ensuring that it doesn’t loosen or wobble during use. The drip tray fits snugly into the base of the machine, preventing any annoying rattling noises or spillage.
Design
This machine boasts a compact design that won’t take up too much space on the countertop, making it perfect for kitchens of all sizes.
The EC702 comes equipped with a frothing wand that folds into the machine, and the design of the water tank makes it easy to refill it from the side.
I noticed an on/off indicator light on the left-hand side of the machine. It’s handy to know if the machine is switched on or off, which is important for its longevity.
There’s also a preheating light. It alerts you when the DeLonghi EC702 is hot enough to start brewing, so you always know when it’s ready.
The steam wand light is also on the same side, making it easy to monitor. While using the EC702, you can adjust the wand pressure with the knob on the opposite side. Speaking of which…
Ease Of Use
I like the fact that the interface of the DeLonghi EC702 is clear and simple, making it easy for even a beginner to use the espresso machine. You certainly don’t need to have any prior experience or expertise to use it.
As mentioned earlier, the machine has indicator lights that show you important information such as steam pressure and preheating.
While they may take some getting used to at first, they are incredibly helpful. This takes the guesswork out of the process and ensures that you can make a consistent cup of espresso every time.
Boiler
Although it may take up to fifteen minutes for the boiler to heat up entirely, the DeLonghi EC702 has the Rapid Cappuccino System, which can maintain the water temperature perfectly between each cup once it is fully heated.
I think this is the machine’s flagship feature, as you don’t have to wait for the boiler to reheat between shots, which can be an annoying thing about these low-end machines.
In addition to the Rapid Cappuccino System, the Dual Thermostat feature is a notable attribute of the EC702. This enables you to brew your espresso, steam your milk, and froth it simultaneously without adversely affecting the temperature of your espresso.
I must say that the EC702 espresso machine’s single boiler is an exceptional achievement. For a coffee enthusiast like myself, it’s a great feeling to find a machine that can deliver consistent shots at this price range.
Water Tank
To my disappointment, the water tank’s capacity is not huge. DeLonghi EC702 holds up to 44 ounces (1.3 litres) of water, which is sufficient for making about 5-6 cups.
On the bright side, the machine has an indicator that gives you an exact idea of the current water level, which is a convenient feature that eliminates guesswork when it comes to refilling.
Also, the water tank is removable. As mentioned earlier in the part of my review where I talked about the design, it conveniently slides from the side of the machine. This makes cleaning it and refilling it a breeze.
Cup Warmer
As a barista, I know how important it is to keep your espresso at the perfect temperature. One key factor in achieving that is making sure your cups are preheated and ready to go.
That said, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the DeLonghi EC702 espresso machine comes equipped with a built-in cup warmer.
The cup warmer is located on the top of the machine, and it can hold up to three cups at a time. The surface is made of stainless steel, which not only looks sleek but also retains heat exceptionally well.
Tamper
I must admit that I found the tamper to be somewhat underwhelming. Its limited functionality didn’t quite match up to the high-performance standards expected.
However, the tamper is actually quite handy for occasional use. It can come in useful in a pinch when you don’t have immediate access to a separate tamper.
Furthermore, it eliminates the need to purchase a separate tamper, which is an added advantage to the DeLonghi EC702. However, I recommend investing in a stainless-steel tamper for the best results.
Portafilter
The EC702 comes with a 3-in-1 pressurised portafilter that allows you to easily pull a single or double shot. Moreover, it is also E.S.E pod compatible which adds more flexibility to the brewing process.
However, being an experienced home barista, I am aware that the pressurized portafilters of the EC702 come with a catch. Although convenient, they put a ceiling on how great your shot can be.
As compared to non-pressurized portafilters, pressurized ones limit your control over the variables that lead to a perfect shot.
Nonetheless, the 3-in-1 pressurized portafilter of the DeLonghi EC702 is an excellent choice for beginners who are just starting out in the world of espresso-making. It is simple to use, compatible with E.S.E pods, and it offers consistent results.
Steam Wand
One of the flagship features of the EC702 is the Pannarello steam wand, which makes it exceptionally easy to whip up a quick cappuccino or latte.
The steam wand is adjustable, which allows you to customize the frothing process based on your preferences. This feature is particularly useful, especially if you like your froth extra creamy or if you’re trying to achieve a specific texture for your latte.
More about the performance of the steam wand a bit later in my review of the DeLonghi EC702 espresso machine.
Drip Tray
For anyone who loves their daily cup of espresso but hates the mess that often comes with it, the removable drip tray feature is super convenient.
The removable drip tray catches any excess drip, ensuring that your machine remains clean and hygienic. You won’t have to wipe down your machine after every shot, which means you can enjoy your coffee at ease without worrying about maintenance.
You can simply slide it out and clean it quickly and efficiently.
Brewing Performance
I was impressed with the DeLonghi EC702 espresso machine’s brewing performance. Given the price range, this little machine can make a very good espresso.
Its self-priming operation makes it hassle-free to start brewing your espresso, while the single and double-pressurized filter baskets give you flexibility in the amount of coffee you want to brew.
What really stood out to me was the consistent heating mechanism, which ensures that the temperature doesn’t fluctuate too much during the brewing process. This makes sure that the taste and texture are consistent with every shot.
However, as mentioned earlier in this DeLonghi EC702 review, you will lose some customization from your shot as the machine comes with pressurized portafilters.
Overall, I can confidently say that the DeLonghi EC702 brewing performance is rock solid. To maximize the performance, fine to extra-fine grind sizes work best.
Milk Frothing Performance
In terms of overall milk frothing performance, the DeLonghi EC702 does an excellent job. You don’t need any special barista skills to make foam for your cappuccino or latte. That is mostly thanks to the Pannarello steam wand.
However, it’s worth mentioning that Pannarello struggles with producing a perfectly smooth microform for latte art. This is not a dealbreaker, though, and it’s pretty standard with machines in this price range.
But here’s the good news: If you’re looking to experiment with different types of froth and want complete control over the process, you can remove the Pannarello attachment and make foam the old-fashioned way.
This is perfect if you want to challenge yourself and take your barista skills to the next level. It may take practice to get perfect results but don’t give up. You can do it!
Cleaning & Maintainance
Keeping Ec702 clean and maintained is easy. In fact, with just a few quick steps, you can ensure that your machine lasts a long time.
First things first, let’s talk about daily upkeep. It’s important to knock out the coffee puck, clean out the filter basket, and wipe off the drip tray every day.
This might sound like a chore, but it only takes a minute or two, and it’s well worth it to keep your machine running smoothly.
Another daily maintenance step that’s easy to overlook, but important to remember, is to purge the steam wand and brew a shot without coffee. This helps keep the brew group clean and ensures that your milk stays frothy and your espresso tastes amazing.
To help, the De’Longhi EC702 espresso machine also has an automatic priming operation that helps keep it in tip-top shape between deep cleans.
And speaking of deep cleans, descalling the machine every 200 coffees or once every two months is recommended by De’Longhi, and it’s actually pretty simple thanks to the user manual.
With all of these simple maintenance steps, the De’Longhi EC702 espresso machine is a low-maintenance appliance that’s easy to keep clean.
Who Is DeLonghi EC702 For?
Overall, the De’Longhi EC702 is a good choice for anyone seeking to enjoy a quality espresso at home without breaking the bank.
Its ease of use, solid build, and reliable performance make it a bargain for the price and a perfect fit for anyone in need of a dependable and practical espresso machine.
Who Is DeLonghi EC702 Not For?
The DeLonghi EC702 isn’t the ideal option for those looking for a comprehensive espresso machine that can do it all.
If you want an all-in-one with automatic frother, temperature control, and integrated burr grinder, check out the Barista Express or La Specialista with a higher price tag. These models offer more features and capabilities.
DeLonghi EC702 Review – Conclusion
After a comprehensive review of the DeLonghi EC702 espresso machine, it is clear why I recommend this machine to home espresso newbies and enthusiasts.
From the 15-bar pressure pump and advanced cappuccino system to its brewing performance and sleek stainless steel design, the DeLonghi EC702 offers a lot of value for your money and will definitely surpass your expectations.
There are some drawbacks that are pretty much expected at this price range such as lower build quality and slow heat up time, but those are easy to forget when you think about the price of this unit.
